Getting Your Overhead Infrared Heaters Right
If you’re putting infrared heaters in a spot like a changing room, you’ve got a bit of a balancing act on your hands. You want people to feel that cozy warmth the second they step in, but you can’t just slap these things anywhere. Here’s the thing: infrared isn’t like a standard space heater that just warms up the air. It sends waves of heat straight to whatever it’s pointing at. If you mount them too close to the ceiling, you’re basically baking your building.
Give the Ceiling Some Breathing Room
Heat doesn’t just stop when it hits the floor. Some of it bounces back or scatters. We call this the “heat plume,” and if there isn’t enough space between the heater and the ceiling, that heat gets trapped. Before you know it, your drywall or acoustic tiles are scorching. Depending on how powerful your unit is, you’ll want at least 0.5 to 1 meter of clearance. Shortwave heaters are especially aggressive—they hit hard and fast—so they need a bit more room to breathe so your ceiling doesn’t start acting like a giant radiator.
The Trade-off
We all want that “five-star” feeling of instant warmth. But trying to squeeze a heater into a tight, low-profile spot usually backfires. If you mount a high-wattage unit too low, you end up with a situation where the person underneath feels like their head is in an oven, while the ceiling above is getting toasted. I see this all the time in old buildings where you can’t change the ceiling height. The fix? Don’t use one massive heater. Instead, use a few lower-wattage lamps. It spreads the heat out and keeps things safe.
The Boring (But Important) Stuff
Don’t cheap out on the wiring. Use high-temperature cables. Standard PVC jackets will literally melt if they’re touching the housing or sitting in that pocket of hot air by the ceiling. And make sure your brackets are rock solid. If the unit sags even a little, your beam angle shifts. Suddenly, you’re not heating the floor anymore—you’re beaming heat directly into your ceiling structure. Not a great look.
