The Gritty Details: Water and Power
Since these live outside, they have to be tough. Look for something rated IP65 or higher. That basically means rain and snow won’t kill the electronics. Most of these use tempered glass to keep the quartz tubes safe and dry. But here is a big warning:don’t just plug these into a random extension cord. These things pull a lot of power. If you don’t have a dedicated circuit with the right wiring, you’re going to be tripping your breakers the moment you try to get warm. It’s a total mood-killer.
Getting Them “Smart”
We all want that “one-click” magic from our phones, but you can’t just put a smart switch in front of a high-power heater. If you do, you’ll probably fry the switch in a few days. The trick is to use a bridge (like Zigbee or Matter) to talk to a heavy-duty relay. The smart hub tells the relay to flip the switch, and the relay handles the heavy lifting of the electricity. Plus, you can get fancy with sensors. I love setting mine to kick in automatically once the temperature drops to 5°C. By the time you walk outside, the heat is already there waiting for you.
A Few Things to Watch Out For
Placement is everything. Radiant heat travels in a straight line. Mount them too high, and you won’t feel a thing. Mount them too low, and you’ll accidentally bake the chair or the table underneath. You have to play around with the height and the wattage to get that “just right” feeling across the whole area. One last tip: while the heaters themselves can handle the rain, your control hubs can’t. Keep the brains of the operation indoors or tucked away in a waterproof box, otherwise, corrosion will eat the circuit boards alive.
